What is sub base ?
Sub base shall consist of crushed mineral aggregate of the gradation and thickness specified as per project specification generally CBR should be 65 to 80 % at 100% . Sub base functions primarily as structural support but it can also minimize the intrusion of fines from the subgrade in to the pavement structure and improve drainage, sub base consist of unbound materials such as gravel and crushed stones. sub base is designed to evenly spread the load on traffic bearing areas . Sub base specification
- Plasticity index in the range of 4 to 6
- Sand equivalent shall be not less than 35
- CBR should be 40% minimum
- Compaction 95 % minimum
- Aggregate size 63 mm down
- Placing of sub base layer not exceed 20 mm
- Tolerance of sub base + 10mm and -20 mm
